Within walls of the historical city nucleus, with the development and urbanization of the city of Mostar, and while establishing and forming of the city authority, Ottoman contemporaries created an artisan-trade complex - carshiya.
Old Mostar trading city district spread on the both Neretva riverbanks. On the left hand side it covered the space northward as far as Sinan-pasha's mosque at Mejdan all the way to the Cejvan-Cehaya's mosque and the Old bridge situated in the south.  It was separated in the Upper carsiya (trading city district) (at the Big market), Lower carsiya (at Small market) and Kuyundziluk carshiya (running in parallel along the left Neretva riverbank with a slightly inclined street running from Mala Tepa – Small market to the Old bridge), and on the right side there was Prijecka carsija. On its left and right hand side, a harmonious line of street-level shops has been formed among which, somewhat higher storehouses, have been interpolated. The abrupt development of Mostar carshiya is best witnessed by the shops built between 1550 and 1570.  Only the three Mostar benefactors (foundation founders (Ceyvan-Cehaya, Nesuh-aga Vucyakovic and Hadji-Mehmed-bey Karadyoz) built as many as 153 shops and several other buildings in that period, which serve the craft, trade and traffic. With the construction and the development of the trading city district in the second half of the sixteenth century, the development of trades took place as well at the same time. In Mostar as many as 30 crafts existed, and the goldsmiths (kuyundziye) have been known far and wide and thence the very name for Kuyundziluk street originated. From the same period dates back the old saying: «He that has no house in Byelusine and no shop in Kuyundziluk is not a rich man».

Technical description for «Labyrinth» facade project

«Labyrinth» structure is located by the Old Bridge in Kuyundziluk Street and it consists of the several connected structures on the cadastre lots numbered 3794, 3795,  3796,  3797,  3798, 3799, 3780 and 3801.  Only the rehabilitation of the western frontage has been planned on the LABYRINTH structure with this study. The «Labyrinth» will be renovated in the shapes of its latest development phase prior to the war destruction. The external walls were cleaned against vegetation, and they were pointed. Pointing mortar is composed of traditional materials and made in a traditional way out of the mixture of slaked lime and sand from Neretva. Treatment of joints was likewise carried out in a traditional way. The walls of Labyrinth cafe were repaired from the structural point of view in such a way that they were injected with a mixture of lime milk and fill. Wall parts which are imploded were renovated with a building of a wall in the same row of stone blocks as the existing one with the stone of the same type with  which the present one has been built, and the binding medium was traditional lime mortar.

Funds to rehabilitate and repair the facade of the „Labyrinth“ cafe were provided by the Federal Ministry of Culture and Sport.
Works which were carried out amounted to 49.575,80 KM.
Rehabilitation and repair works lasted from 19th September 2008 to 25th October 10.2008.
